image information
If at the end of my photographic career someone said choose your top 5 images you’ve captured, this would be among them. Urban Decay holds a special place in my heart for many reason, but attaining this image was far from easy…
A good friend and great photographer once told me, when your out and about getting shots always remember one thing ‘always look back’..
On a hot sticky day walking back to our hotel cutting through Old Havana, we came to the end of road, it was time to continue in a different direction now. We had passed a very small grassy area where young cuban kids played on, with benches on either side of it. I was about to turn and walk on, but those three words echoed in my head, naturally I looked back. A very basic run down set of apartments stood before me, two floors high by 4 apartments wide, and dead centre of all this crumbling, tired tatty image you see today. But in order to capture it I had to elevate myself.
Luckily the small grassy area was slightly raised but it still wasn’t enough. Using the park bench I managed to get some height behind me, but it still wasn’t close to where I needed to be! There was only one thing for it, I had to take series of shots whilst balancing on the back rest of the bench, going up and down like a yo-yo….I must admit I did create a little stir of attention with the locals, and that day certainly made a few people smile..
Thankfully no broken bones accrued and I walked away ‘hoping’ for a good outcome…the reward was massive.
